Satellite TV programming is made possible through the use of a communications satellite that sends out signals. The television signals are then received by homes through satellite dishes and set-top boxes. Satellite television is a worthy alternative to terrestrial or cable programming, as it is able to deliver channels not accessible to the latter two.

The first satellite TV signal was transmitted way back in 1962. This signal was sent from Europe and dispatched all over North America via the Telstar satellite. This pioneering event has gone on to incite the presence of commercial communication satellites.

Satellite television has come a long way since 1962. Today, more and more homes are planning their move from land-based television programming to satellite TV programming.
